New World Kids

This series consists of two publications for New World Kids.

In 2012, Susan Russell Marcus, asked Herbert to collaborate with her and another LAL originator, Susie Monday, to develop an early childhood program based on the elements of form, which she called the “Sensory Alphabet.” She had piloted the program as a summer workshop with kids at the Aldrich Museum in Connecticut. Herbert wrote materials to expand the program into reading, math, science, and social/emotional learning that stretched over a school year of in- or out-of-school classes. Beginning with kindergarten and first graders, they did professional development at Big Thought in Dallas, Creative Action in Austin, and other venues. Shortly thereafter, Herbert wrote a book of activities for preschool, which expanded the program further and Marcus piloted a version for second graders, again in Connecticut. Herbert helped Marcus and Monday write the book The Missing Alphabet, published by Greenleaf Press in 2013. Herbert also wrote New World Kids at School, which Foundry Press also translated into Spanish for Julia Jarrell SEED program.

Series · 2006 - 2012
Part of Cynthia Herbert Publications and Curricula

This series consists of student reflects and a working notebook of guides created for the SEED (Scholarships for Education and Economic Development) Program.

SEED was USAID-funded program, administered by Georgetown University and based in San Antonio at their Community Colleges. Julia Jarrell was director of this program, along with several other coordinators. Jarrell sought the help of Herbert, to take educational theory to practice. In the program, cohorts of 20 teachers from the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, or Nicaragua came to the U.S. to study for a year. During a 15-year period, over 400 teachers were involved. In 2012 Herbert was honored for this work by Alamo Community College District’s International Programs “In Recognition for Outstanding Efforts in Developing Innovative Training Curriculum.” Herbert wrote five guides for this program: “Como crear una lección inolvidable” (How to create an unforgettable lesson.)
