Malcolm Lowry Collection

The Malcolm Lowry Collection contains all books by Lowry in all their hardcover and paperback editions available as of 1983. Nearly all Lowry contributions to both books and periodicals are included as well. Numerous translations of the works into other languages are part of the collection. Books about Lowry, books in which he is mentioned, and other books relating to him, notably those of Conrad Aiken, are included. This finding aid describes the non-book materials in the collection that are not listed in the library catalog.

The central figure in this collection is Mattie Strickland Russell; other correspondents in the collection include her husband, Richard Robertson Russell; her daughter, Elma Dill Spencer; her son-in-law, Richard French Spencer; her father, George Strickland; and her grandparents, Amos and Emily Strickland, among others. Additional correspondence to Mattie Russell is from children's author Will James. The collection also contains biographical information about her father, George Strickland. In addition, the collection contains ephemera related to Texas history.

This collection consists of materials collected by Col. Stacy Clapp by and about popular author Richard Armour. The two men were acquaintances from growing up in Pomona, California; Clapp became a fan of Armour's writing, and the two began a correspondence in 1959 that continued through the 1980s. Materials included in this collection include correspondence between Armour and Clapp; correspondence of Clapp's with other individuals regarding Armour's work; clippings of Armour's work collected by Clapp; and ephemera related to Armour's work collected by Clapp.

Collection of memorabilia related to the 1977 National Women's Conference collected by Gloria Primera. Ms. Primera, a resident of San Antonio, was one of the runners who participated in the torch relay leading up to the convention. Two volumes of property assessments conducted in the city of San Antonio, Texas. The first is dated from 1853 by assessor José María Rodriguez. The second is dated from 1864 by assessor A. Eule. The assessments list and provides values for property owned by San Antonio citizens, including parcels of land, livestock, wagons and farm equipment, jewelry, and miscellaneous items. Enslaved people are also listed under property assessed; the names, sex, and ages of enslaved people are not listed.

Series 1 contains documents related to musical performances, including notes, correspondence, photographs, blueprints, clippings, and sheet music. Series 2 contains records from the San Antonio Symphony's library, including inventories and annual reports from the librarian. Series 3 contains clippings and ephemera related to the Symphony. Series 4 consists of scores and sheet music with significant annotation by Alessandro.

The Marjorie McGown Collection consists largely of ephemera from San Antonio society and cultural events between 1909 and 1970, including materials related to the American Red Cross during World War I, the 1931 San Antonio Bicentennial, the Junior League, the Order of the Alamo, art exhibits, ballets, musical events, operas, and plays. The majority of the materials are related to events in San Antonio, though there are some programs from Miss McGown's travels, including items from Houston, New York City, London, and Paris. The collection also includes some personal correspondence, two scrapbooks, a pressed fern book, and a sketching purse. Some material is dated from after Miss McGown's death in 1965, and was added to the collection by an unknown individual.

The Fay Sinkin Collection contains records relating to the activities of the Aquifer Protection Association (APA) during the 1970’s. Formed in 1974 by Fay Sinkin at the request of the San Antonio League of Women Voters, the APA drew public attention to the aquifer and developed support for the purchase of sensitive areas in the aquifer recharge zone. The APA was instrumental in promoting both short and long range policies and planning, particularly in regard to zoning, that focused on aquifer protection as the City of San Antonio rapidly grew northward.

This collection consists of materials from the creation of the American School of the Air radio program. Series 1 contains correspondence regarding the creation of the program; noteworthy correspondents include CBS president William S. Paley and NBC president Merlin Aylesworth. Series 2 contains teachers manuals for various seasons of the broadcast. Series 3 contains promotional materials, and Series 4 contains other planning documents. Series 5 contains letters from listeners and educators interested in the program; notable correspondents include Strom Thurmond, a school superintendent at that time. Series 6 contains pamphlets that were inspiration for future programming. Series 7 contains scripts for episodes of American School of the Air that were broadcast in 1930. Authors of these episodes include Thornton Burgess, Howard Hanson, Henry Turner Bailey, David Ross, Julius Klein, William John Cooper, William Ford Manley, and Henry Fisk Carlton. Many scripts contain producer notes from Erlandon. Series 8 contains publications from Freedom's Code, a civics education program advanced by Erlandson in the 1960s, and Series 9 contains biographical information and correspondence concerning the collection.

The collection also includes a few reproductions of articles.

John W. Sansom Manuscript

Typewritten manuscript of the "Memoirs of John W. Sansom, 1834-1916." Written several years before Sansom's death, this volume includes his first person accounts of his childhood, Union support during the Civil War, involvement in the Battle of Nueces River, and career in the Texas Rangers.
