Earl M. Lewis Symposium on Urban Affairs

This collection consists of planning documentation, proceedings, and recordings of the two Earl M. Lewis Symposium on Urban Affairs held at Trinity University in 2004 and 2005. The symposiums were planned and carried out by the Director of the Urban Affairs program, Char Miller, with the assistance of Trinity University trustee and alum Walter Huntley. The first symposium was titled The City: Past, Present and Future which focused on San Antonio. The second symposium was titled A Tale of Two Cities: Atlanta and San Antonio. The symposium was named in honor of Earl M. Lewis, Professor Emeritus at Trinity. Lewis was the founding director of the graduate program in 1968. He was appointed George W. Brackenridge Distinguished Professor of Urban Studies in 1982. Lewis retired from Trinity University in 1990.

Collection contains drafts of poetry and plays written by David Matias, an alumnus of Trinity University who died of AIDS at an early age. Much of his work deals with issues of identity, coming out, and his illness. There are also three video recordings: a performance of one play, a poetry reading, and a guest lecture at a Harvard University class.

Ms. Primera, a resident of San Antonio, was one of the runners who participated in the torch relay leading up to the convention. This collection consists of news clippings, print ephemera, her torch bearer shirt, and buttons from the convention.

Katherine Anne Porter Materials

Two letters related to author Katherine Anne Porter. The first is a copy of a 1965 letter from Porter to Dr. Louise Gossett, wife of Trinity University professor Dr. Thomas Gossett, regarding a meeting between the Gossetts, Porter, and Flannery O'Connor (the Gossetts introduced Porter and O'Connor in 1958). The second is a letter from a 1951 Trinity alumna, Marion Conditt, to President Brazil inquiring about memories she has of taking a summer course with Porter in the late 1940s. The archives staff has been unable to find any records supporting or refuting this claim.

Papers of Walter R. Huntley, Jr., city official, economic development specialist and civic leader, date primarily between 1983-2018. Most relate to economic development work that occurred while Huntley was President of the Atlanta Economic Development Corporation (1986-1997) and President of Huntley Partners, Inc., (1997-2013). The collection primarily consists of reports, tax allocation studies, assessments, research findings, and proposals for projects sponsored by Huntley & Associates in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Files include the development of the Atlanta-Chattanooga high-speed passenger rail and various projects in Eatonville, Florida, Savannah Georgia, Norfolk, Virginia, and Orlando, Florida.

Market analyses and implementation plans for public and private development projects are in the collection as well. Also included are some of Huntley’s personal files including newspaper clippings; personal photographs and correspondence and other material about Huntley’s activities with Trinity University, AEDC, the City of Atlanta and the private sector.
