Walter Huntley Papers

Papers of Walter R. Huntley, Jr., city official, economic development specialist and civic leader, date primarily between 1983-2018. Most relate to economic development work that occurred while Huntley was President of the Atlanta Economic Development Corporation (1986-1997) and President of Huntley Partners, Inc., (1997-2013). The collection primarily consists of reports, tax allocation studies, assessments, research findings, and proposals for projects sponsored by Huntley & Associates in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Files include the development of the Atlanta-Chattanooga high-speed passenger rail and various projects in Eatonville, Florida, Savannah Georgia, Norfolk, Virginia, and Orlando, Florida.

Market analyses and implementation plans for public and private development projects are in the collection as well. Also included are some of Huntley’s personal files including newspaper clippings; personal photographs and correspondence and other material about Huntley’s activities with Trinity University, AEDC, the City of Atlanta and the private sector.

This collection holds original issues of the Trinitonian from its first appearance as a monthly campus magazine in December 1900, through its present day circulation as the student-run newspaper of Trinity University. Five issues from 1888-1890 of its predecessor publication, the Trinity Exponent, are part of the collection, as are a small number of other early university periodicals. These titles include the Trinity University Advocate, Trinity Collegian, Trinity Herald, and Trinity Daily Optimist, and span the years of 1875-1915.

This collection contains material from Ursula Lauderdale, a Texas artist and former art instructor at Trinity University. It includes a small scrapbook, photographs, correspondence, documents, and news clippings. The scrapbook, clippings, membership cards, and many of the photographs help to illustrate her work as an artist during the early 20th century.

Paul Baker Papers

The Paul Baker Papers consist of correspondence, photographs, administrative records, scripts, playbills, blueprints for theatre construction, periodical clippings and scrapbooks spanning the years 1925-1976 with the bulk of the material concerning the mid-century. The material from the latter years relates to Baker’s tenure at Trinity University, but the majority of the collection is from his years with Baylor University and his work with the Dallas Theatre Center. The collection also contains a small portion of Kitty Baker’s correspondence and personal papers as well as Jearnine Wagner’s papers regarding efforts in children’s theatre.

Marjorie McGown Collection of San Antonio Ephemera

The Marjorie McGown Collection consists largely of ephemera from San Antonio society and cultural events between 1909 and 1970, including materials related to the American Red Cross during World War I, the 1931 San Antonio Bicentennial, the Junior League, the Order of the Alamo, art exhibits, ballets, musical events, operas, and plays. The majority of the materials are related to events in San Antonio, though there are some programs from Miss McGown's travels, including items from Houston, New York City, London, and Paris. The collection also includes some personal correspondence, two scrapbooks, a pressed fern book, and a sketching purse. Some material is dated from after Miss McGown's death in 1965, and was added to the collection by an unknown individual.

Collection contains drafts of poetry and plays written by David Matias, an alumnus of Trinity University who died of AIDS at an early age. Much of his work deals with issues of identity, coming out, and his illness. There are also three video recordings: a performance of one play, a poetry reading, and a guest lecture at a Harvard University class.

This collection consists of materials from the creation of the American School of the Air radio program. Series 1 contains correspondence regarding the creation of the program; noteworthy correspondents include CBS president William S. Paley and NBC president Merlin Aylesworth. Series 2 contains teachers manuals for various seasons of the broadcast. Series 3 contains promotional materials, and Series 4 contains other planning documents. Series 5 contains letters from listeners and educators interested in the program; notable correspondents include Strom Thurmond, a school superintendent at that time. Series 6 contains pamphlets that were inspiration for future programming. Series 7 contains scripts for episodes of American School of the Air that were broadcast in 1930. Authors of these episodes include Thornton Burgess, Howard Hanson, Henry Turner Bailey, David Ross, Julius Klein, William John Cooper, William Ford Manley, and Henry Fisk Carlton. Many scripts contain producer notes from Erlandon. Series 8 contains publications from Freedom's Code, a civics education program advanced by Erlandson in the 1960s, and Series 9 contains biographical information and correspondence concerning the collection.

The Rev. William M. Kelly, M.D., Papers consist primarily of typed copies of correspondence between Dr. Samuel Lee Hornbeak, President of Trinity University, and William Kelly, a Trinity alumnus and medical missionary in China. The correspondence is concerned with discussions of Chinese artifacts, accounts of Chinese history and customs, and descriptions of Dr. Kelly's journeys in China. There is some correspondence between Kelly and other Trinity affiliates, as well as between Hornbeak and other Chinese missionaries. The collection also contains later correspondence and inventories regarding the Chinese artifacts given to Trinity by Rev. Kelly, and genealogical research conducted by Kelly's grandson, Brooks Kelly.
